The Blue Puzzle center in cooperation with the pediatricians of the country will enable the early diagnosis of children using direct observations, family history, medical examinations and perceptions of parents.

Advice for parents

Perform proprioceptive heavy work activities before non-preferred care tasks to help with calming, regulation, and encouraging participation. Examples include push-ups or wall push-ups, bear hugs, Wilbarger brushing protocol, joint compressions, animal walks (e.g., frog jumps, bear walk), carrying heavy objects across the room.

Use a 'First, Then' approach and visual schedules to help prepare the child. Model tasks, play calming music, or provide distractions if the task is too challenging.

Shower Time

  • Use the 'iDo Hygiene' app, which visually describes the steps involved in bathing, as well as other self-care tasks.
  • For some children with vestibular processing difficulties, filling the water at a lower level may provide a greater sense of confidence.
  • If tilting the head back during hair rinsing is challenging...
  • Let the child dip their head forward, as this may be preferred over tilting the head back.
  • Allow the child to wear a mask or plastic goggles and pour water over their head.
  • Encourage the child to use the showerhead themselves.

Brushing teeth

  • Experiment with toothpaste of different flavors to determine which one the child prefers
  • Do not initially use toothpaste to increase the child's comfort with the idea of brushing their teeth
  • Start with a small amount to prevent discomfort during brushing
  • Begin with 1-2 teeth per day, then gradually increase the number
  • Try different water temperatures to see which one is better tolerated by the mouth
  • Consider a toothbrush that sings or an electric toothbrush
  • Try brushing teeth while in the bathtub to combine self-care tasks

Haircut

  • Allow the child to observe a parent or another family member cutting their hair.
  • Plan the haircut at a time of day when the salon is not busy, or when the child is generally calmer/happier.
  • Play pretend haircuts with your child, mimicking haircuts with fingers.
  • Toy animals can also be included. The goal is to increase the child’s comfort with the concept of getting a haircut.
  • If possible, plan the duration of the haircut and use a visual timer to show the child how long the haircut will last.
  • Use a visual schedule so the child can understand what will happen before, during, and after the haircut.
  • Provide a tangible reward after the haircut (e.g., ice cream, a short trip to a favorite park or museum).

Cutting Nails

  • Start slowly, cutting one nail per day to ease the child and gradually increase their tolerance to nail trimming.
  • Make nail trimming part of the weekly routine, not a rare event.
  • Try a nail clipper (used in cosmetics) to assess if this tool is less unpleasant for the child.

Wilbarger Brush Protocol

  • 5 minutes therapy
  • 10-15 rubs
  • Add 10 quick movements with short pressure on each joint, including chest and shoulders. Avoid the head, stomach, back, and neck.
  • Relieves stress, anxiety, relaxes muscles. Apply pressure therapy with a brush to calm the child. Help them with attention and concentration.
  • Carefully hold and touch only the limb you are rubbing.
  • Use directly on the skin; if you wish to use it over clothes, ensure the clothes are spread out.
  • Rub 1. Arms, 2. Legs, 3. Back. Do not rub the stomach, chest, and head.
  • Rub with a light pressure that is comfortable, without causing tickling or pain.
